The food matches the setting. The wine list is serious without being intimidating, and the menu has enough range that two people with completely different tastes can both be happy. My personal highlight was the Beef Bourguignon, melt-in-your-mouth, the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation.

If you’re going on a first date in Tbilisi and want somewhere that does all the work for you atmospherically, this is the one.

Tbilisi has a small but genuinely impressive Japanese food scene, and Izakaya sits at the top of it for date nights.

It’s tiny, five or six tables maximum, which is exactly what makes it special. The kitchen is completely open, so you watch your food being cooked right in front of you, which turns the meal into a bit of a show. The atmosphere feels less like a restaurant and more like being invited into someone’s home kitchen, warm and personal in a way that bigger places simply can’t replicate.

We went for a date night and ordered the negima, a chicken bowl, and it was genuinely one of the best things I’ve eaten in Tbilisi. The chicken was incredibly juicy and full of flavour, the kind of dish you keep thinking about after. We finished with mochi for dessert which was decent, a nice ending to the evening.

Barbarestan is in a different category to everything else on this list. It’s pricier, it’s special-occasion territory, and it is worth every lari.

The restaurant is based on a 19th-century Georgian cookbook discovered in an antique market, every dish on the menu comes from those original recipes, brought back to life with serious culinary skill. The building itself feels like dining inside a piece of Georgian history, with dark wood, antique details, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely theatrical without being overdone.

Go here for anniversaries, milestone celebrations, or any night that needs to be genuinely unforgettable. Don’t go here if you haven’t booked, it fills up weeks in advance during high season.

4. 47 Restaurant, Best for French-Georgian Fusion

47 is one of those restaurants that doesn’t shout about itself but quietly delivers every single time.

The menu sits somewhere between French bistro and Georgian kitchen, familiar techniques, local ingredients, the kind of food that feels considered without being pretentious. It’s not cheap, but it’s not unreasonable either, and the value for what you get is genuinely good.

The atmosphere is what keeps me coming back: chic without being cold, candlelit, with occasional live music evenings that turn a good dinner into a proper night out. And the crème brûlée, I’ll just say it, is one of the best in Tbilisi. A perfect way to end an evening.

5. Ratto Bistro, Best Italian Date Night

Ratto Bistro is where Matthieu and I go when we want Italian, which, given that he’s French and particular about food, tells you everything you need to know about the quality.

The four-cheese pizza is the thing to order. I’ve eaten a lot of pizza in a lot of countries, and Ratto’s doesn’t disappoint, properly made, great base, generous with the cheese in a way that doesn’t feel cheap. The cocktails are fresh and well-made, the service is warm without being intrusive, and the atmosphere inside hits that sweet spot between cozy neighbourhood restaurant and somewhere that feels like an occasion.

💡 One important note: Ratto is usually fully booked, especially on weekends. Call ahead and reserve a table. Don’t show up and hope for the best.

We had my graduation dinner here with both sets of parents, French and Persian, and somehow it worked perfectly for everyone. That tells you this is a restaurant that handles groups, occasions, and high expectations with ease.

Asado is our Valentine’s Day spot, and has been for a reason.

The focus is perfectly grilled meat, steaks, lamb chops, large sharing platters if you’re feeling ambitious. The vibe is relaxed and warm rather than stiff and formal, which makes it good for both casual dinners and special occasions without that restaurant-being-on-its-best-behaviour feeling.

The detail I always mention when I recommend Asado: they take a Polaroid photo of you at your table and give it to you as a keepsake. It’s a small thing, but on a Valentine’s dinner or anniversary, it’s the kind of thoughtful touch that makes an evening memorable. We still have ours.

The giant meat platter for two is the move if you’re both serious carnivores.

We ordered the Burratina Pizza and it was one of the best pizzas we’ve had in Tbilisi — rich, creamy, the kind that makes you eat more than you planned. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy, and it genuinely feels like you’ve stepped into a neighbourhood Italian rather than a restaurant trying to look like one.

The one practical thing to know: Alfredo doesn’t take reservations — it’s first come, first served. Go early or be prepared to wait, especially on weekends. It’s worth the wait, but plan accordingly for a date night so you’re not standing outside hungry for 45 minutes.

Khash Khash is already on my Georgian restaurants list, but it absolutely deserves a place here too, because for a date night that feels genuinely Tbilisi rather than international-city-restaurant, nothing comes close.

The kharcho (a rich, walnut-thickened Georgian meat soup) is one of the best versions I’ve had in the city. The elarji — a melted cheese and cornmeal dish that stretches like mozzarella, is the kind of thing you eat while slightly in disbelief that it’s possible. And the wine list is excellent.

This is the place for couples who want to actually eat Georgian food on date night rather than defaulting to Italian or French. Lively, warm, real.

Practical Tips for a Romantic Night Out in Tbilisi

Book ahead for everything except Alfredo. Tbilisi’s better restaurants fill up quickly, especially Thursday through Saturday. For Ratto in particular, call at least a few days in advance.

Budget realistically. A romantic dinner for two with wine at a mid-range restaurant (Ratto, Alfredo, 47) will typically run 80–150 GEL. At the higher end (Rooms Kitchen, Dumas, Barbarestan) expect 200–350 GEL for two with wine. Both are reasonable by European standards.

Georgian wine is not optional. Order it. Even if you normally drink French or Italian, trying a Georgian amber wine or a Saperavi on a date night in Tbilisi is part of the experience. Ask the waiter for a recommendation rather than defaulting to what you know.

Evenings start late. Most Tbilisi restaurants are quiet before 8pm and hit their stride around 9–10pm. If you want the full atmosphere, don’t arrive at 7.
