Welcome to Martvili Canyon, a breathtaking gorge tucked away in the Samegrelo region of western Georgia. Crystal-clear turquoise waters, towering limestone cliffs covered in dense greenery, cascading waterfalls, and a history that goes back to Georgia’s royal families.

I visited Martvili on my way through western Georgia, arriving early in the morning before the crowds. It was genuinely one of those places that stops you in your tracks. This guide covers everything you need to know before you go.

💡Important: since January 2026, all tourists visiting Georgia are required to have travel insurance. What makes Martvili special among Georgia’s many canyons is its unique appearance, slender tree trunks, spindly branches, and huge boulders covered in moss hanging over sparkling turquoise waters.

The canyon stretches for 2.4 kilometres with rock walls reaching up to 70 metres high. The Abasha River has carved out a gorge that feels completely removed from the rest of the world, shady, cool, and green even in the height of summer.

And then there is the history. The canyon was once a private bathing spot for the Dadiani royal family, who ruled this part of Georgia until 1867. The private staircase they had built to access the pools is still visible today, a small but genuinely fascinating detail that most visitors walk past without realising what they are looking at.

Entrance Fee and Tickets

The entrance fee for Martvili Canyon for foreigners is 40 GEL per adult for the walking trail. The boat ride costs an additional 20 GEL per person, bringing the total to 60 GEL if you want to do both.

Tickets can be purchased on-site at the visitor centre with cash or credit card. You can also pre-purchase tickets online through GURU.GE, which is worth considering during peak summer months to skip the queue.

Discounts: Georgian citizens and residents qualify for discounted ticket prices. Students and school groups also receive reduced rates with valid ID.

The Boat Ride: Is It Worth It?

Yes. Absolutely yes. 🙌🏼

The boat ride costs an additional 20 GEL per person and lasts around 15 to 20 minutes, covering 300 metres along the northern section of the canyon. It sounds short but it is the best part of the visit.

👉🏻 Here is why: the walking trail takes you along the southern section of the canyon from an elevated position, meaning you look down at the water and canyon walls. The boat takes you into the northern section at water level, meaning you look straight ahead at the rock walls, waterfalls and overhanging greenery from directly below. It is a completely different perspective and the only way to get up close to the most dramatic part of the gorge.

The boats are small inflatable vessels. Life jackets are provided and the boats can accommodate up to six people. You will need to paddle yourself but a staff member assists if needed.

Restrictions to note:

1. Children under 5 or shorter than 1 meter aren’t allowed on the boat.
2. The boat does not operate when water levels are high or the current is too strong, which typically occurs in spring or after heavy rainfall.
3. The ride ends where it starts.

The Walking Trail

The 700-metre stone-paved circular hiking route starts from the visitor centre and follows the historic Dadiani trail. It includes 2 bridges, 3 viewing platforms, and a historic 30-step staircase built from large limestone boulders.

The trail is easy and suitable for all fitness levels. It is paved throughout, which makes it accessible, but it gets slippery when wet so closed-toe shoes with grip are essential. Do not attempt this in flip flops or heels.

The whole trail takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour at a relaxed pace, stopping at the viewing platforms and taking photos. Combined with the boat ride, plan for a total of 1.5 to 2 hours at the canyon.

From Tbilisi

Martvili Canyon is approximately 283 km from Tbilisi, which takes 4 to 5 hours by car depending on traffic and stops along the way.

By car or rental car: The most comfortable option. The road is in reasonable condition with a highway covering most of the route. If you are driving from Tbilisi, consider an overnight stay in the area to break up the journey rather than doing it as a pure day trip.

By marshrutka: Take a marshrutka to Tskaltubo from Didube station in Tbilisi, then switch to a taxi for the remaining 50 km to Martvili Canyon. Total journey time is 4.5 to 5.5 hours. This is the budget option but involves multiple transfers.

By guided tour: The easiest option if you do not have a car. Several tours depart from Tbilisi combining Martvili Canyon with Prometheus Cave in a single long day.

From Kutaisi

Martvili is approximately 50 km from Kutaisi, around 1 to 1.5 hours by car. This makes it a perfect half-day or full-day trip from the city.

By taxi: A return taxi from Kutaisi to the canyon costs around 60 to 80 GEL. Negotiate the price and agree on a return pickup time before the driver leaves.

By marshrutka and taxi: Take a marshrutka to Martvili town, then a short taxi to the canyon. Budget option but slower.

By guided tour: Several tours from Kutaisi combine Martvili with Okatse Canyon and Prometheus Cave in one day.

From Batumi

Martvili is approximately 152 km from Batumi, around 2 hours by car. An easy day trip if you are based on the Black Sea coast.

Best Time to Visit Martvili Canyon

🌸 Spring (April to May) is beautiful but note that the boat rides may not operate if water levels are high after rainfall. The canyon is lush and at its most green.

☀️ Summer (June to August) is the most popular time. The water is at its most vivid turquoise and the canyon is cool and shaded compared to the heat outside. The downside is crowds. The area is small and the walking paths are tight, so as soon as it fills up it becomes quite unpleasant.

🍂 Autumn (September to October) is my personal recommendation. Fewer visitors, comfortable temperatures, and the canyon takes on a warm golden quality that is particularly beautiful.

❄️ Winter (November to March) means the canyon largely to yourself. Cold but peaceful. The boat rides may be suspended.

What time to arrive: I arrived at 10 AM sharp when it opened and it was not crowded at all. By the time I was leaving, significantly more people were arriving. As soon as visitors start flooding in, the narrow paths feel congested. Get there right at opening time for the best experience.

What to Wear and Bring

• 👟 Closed-toe shoes with grip – the trail is paved but gets very slippery when wet. No sandals or heels.
• 🌂 Light rain jacket – the canyon is shaded and can feel cool even in summer
• 💧 Water, there are limited facilities inside, bring your own
• 💵 Cash – bring GEL for the entrance fee and boat ride, though cards are now accepted at the ticket office
• 📷 Camera – the turquoise water photographs beautifully, especially in morning light

Where to Stay Near Martvili Canyon

If you are coming from Tbilisi and want to break the journey, the town of Martvili has basic guesthouses and small hotels that are inexpensive and perfectly comfortable for a night.

Martvili Canyon works perfectly as part of a wider western Georgia itinerary. If you are already making the journey, these are the natural additions:

Okatse Canyon is 30 km from Martvili and a completely different experience, a suspended walkway over a dramatic gorge with a glass bridge section. Many visitors combine both canyons in a single day.

Prometheus Cave is approximately 50 km from Martvili near Kutaisi. One of the largest caves in Georgia with extraordinary stalactites and underground rivers. A natural pairing with Martvili.

Zugdidi is the main city of the Samegrelo region, 30 km from Martvili, with the Dadiani Palace Museum, home to one of three copies of Napoleon’s death mask. Worth a stop if you are passing through.

Kutaisi is western Georgia’s second city, with the UNESCO-listed Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. A great overnight base for exploring the whole region.
