Weekend Motorcycle Ride to Dashbashi Canyon

There’s something magical about a first adventure with someone special.

Ours was a thrilling motor ride from Tbilisi to Dashbashi Canyon—a journey combining breathtaking landscaping, fascinating history, and cozy mountain moments. This was our first gateway together, and it was unforgettable.

We set out for a weekend ride from Tbilisi that was more than just a trip—an unforgettable adventure. With a mix of stunning views, historical landmarks, and quiet mountain retreats, this journey quickly became one of our favorites.

First Stop: Didgori Memorial Battle Site

Our first stop was the Didgori Memorial, but before we reached it, the drive itself was a treat.

From Tbilisi, it takes about an hour and 15 minutes to reach, but once we turn onto the Nichbisi-Didgori-Didi Toneti road in Kvemo Kartli, the landscape completely changed.

The road was wonderful, with wide-open fields, rolling hills, and views that made every twist and turn feel like an adventure. It set the perfect tone for the historic site we were about to visit.

Didgori Memorial is an impressive site that honors one of Georgia’s greatest military victories.

This isn’t just any battlefield—it’s the site of the Battle of Didgori, fought in 1121. This battle is often called the “Miraculous Victory” because King David IV of Georgia, with a much smaller army, defeated the massive Seljuk Empire forces.

Here’s where it gets fascinating: King David, also known as David the Builder, was a tactical genius 🧠.

He used deception and surprise to trap the Seljuk army in the narrow Didgori Valley, making their size a disadvantage. The victory paved the way for Georgia’s Golden Age, a cultural and political flourishing period.

Today, the memorial stands on the battlefield, with tall sword-like monuments rising into the sky, symbolizing Georgian strength and resilience.

It’s not just a historical site; it’s a place where you feel the pride and courage of Georgia’s past.

Fun Fact💡: The Didgori Battle is so significant that it’s celebrated annually on August 12th as Didgoroba, a national holiday where locals gather to commemorate this heroic victory.

The Memorial is surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, making it an excellent stop for a quick walk and photos. Plus, the peaceful atmosphere is perfect for soaking in a piece of Georgian history.

Dashbashi Canyon

After a one-hour ride from Didgori, we finally reached Canyon—a natural wonder that feels almost untouched. The canyon is only half a kilometer from the wooden cabin we’d booked, which was perfect because we didn’t have to travel far before reaching one of Georgia’s most beautiful spots.

We dropped our bags and headed straight for the canyon. Reaching the canyon isn’t as simple as a quick stroll, but the effort is worth it.

The Journey Down

The hike begins with a metal walkway featuring railings and stairs, providing a safe and sturdy start. This path leads to a paved road, which is slightly steep but manageable for most visitors.

The total round-trip distance is about 3.6 kilometers, so be prepared for a bit of walking.

As you make your way down, you’ll encounter a steep descent along winding paths surrounded by lush greenery.

On cloudy or rainy days, wearing non-slip shoes is a must, as the trails can get slippery. Along the way, there are resting areas with shelters and benches to take a breather if needed.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find the highlight of the canyon: a metal viewing platform right in front of the stunning waterfall. The water flows down a moss-covered, terraced cliff, creating a magical view.

At the base, the small pond reflects an emerald-green color, adding to the fairytale-like charm.

What to Pack for Your Visit

Comfortable, non-slip shoes (sneakers work well)

Sunscreen and a hat or scarf for sun protection
Snacks or food (there are no designated picnic areas, but you can nibble while walking towards the waterfall)

Important Tips: The hike back up can be more challenging, especially after a long day, so budget around 1.5 hours for your visit to the canyon. Take your time, enjoy the resting areas, and don’t forget to stop for photos📸.

Now, about those stairs, they’re no joke😅. Carrying my motorcycle jacket and helmet down was a real workout, but once you reach it, it’s all worth it. The canyon is breathtaking with its waterfall, greenery, and the famous Diamond Bridge.

Even though the bridge was closed for maintenance when we visited, it was still stunning from afar. It’s a glass bridge suspended high above the canyon floor, and the view from it (when open) is wild.

I’ll be honest, I was looking forward to walking on it, but even without crossing it, the whole place felt magical.

After soaking in the views, we were ready for a break, and luckily, there were small cafes and restaurants nearby. You can easily stop for breakfast or a meal. The food is simple and tasty—perfect for recharging before hitting the road again.

The Tsalka Reservoir was visible right outside the window, offering beautiful views of the mountains and surrounding nature.
